Photographer Laura Paulescu of Crowned Photography has a passion for capturing the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth. Her beautiful photography and videography captures everything from pregnancy photos to in-hospital scenes to newborn photos. “I am in awe every time I get to witness the moment each family sees their new baby for the first time,” she writes on her website.”To see them take their first breaths, cry their first cry, and settle in sweetly on their mother’s chest.”
One mother, a blogger named Melissa Willets, was particularly moved by one of Laura’s photos. The photo is of a little girl sitting on her mom’s pregnant belly right before Mom goes to have her second daughter.
“Pure sweetness.” reads the caption. “Last hugs before saying goodbye to momma & the last time she would sit on that big round belly with her sister still inside.”
The image stirred up an emotional memory for Melissa, and she was inspired to share her story on her blog:
When I saw this photo of a mom saying goodbye to an older child before giving birth, everything around me stopped. And I stared.
Portland, Oregon-based birth photographer Laura Paulescu’s emotional image took me back to this moment in my own life. How I stood on the driveway of our home, about to leave for the hospital for my scheduled induction. How I clutched onto my firstborn for dear life. This would be the last moment she’d be my only baby. Forever.
And while I couldn’t wait to welcome my new baby, my heart was breaking. I felt completely shattered inside. I didn’t want to let go. Ever.
Finally, my husband pried us apart, reminding me we’d be late for the induction if I stood in the driveway all night. Ugh. I think I sobbed most of the way to the hospital. It was brutal.
Of course, once my second daughter arrived, I fell in love with her instantly. And I couldn’t wait to introduce her to her big sister. They became best friends right away.
I was so moved by Melissa’s story. Everyone always talks about the moment they get to say hello to their new baby, but what about the goodbyes? There’s so much talk about how a mother enters a new chapter in life whenever her family expands, but no one mentions how difficult it can be for that last chapter to end.
While Melissa addresses that difficult goodbye, she also reminds us that the best is yet to come.
