Police in New York have taken three babysitters, including two teenagers, into custody after they left a 9-month-old baby in a Long Island casino.
According to Long Island News 12, the babysitters were supposed to be watching the baby, but an argument with the infant’s mother sent their night into a frenzy.
Police say a 21-year-old woman hired the 18-year-old babysitter through SitterCity.com, but the teen ended up being 14, not 18.
It remains unclear if the baby’s mother knew her babysitter was only 14, but authorities say the infant was left in the teen’s custody at some point.
After taking the baby, the teen reportedly met up with her 16-year-old boyfriend and mother.
The 21-year-old mom reportedly failed to meet the babysitters at their designated time later in the night, so the trio called police around 6:40 p.m.
Although Fourth Precinct officers responded to the home of the 14-year-old girl and her mother, 44-year-old Dejuana Stewart, they insisted that they had resolved their issue and planned on meeting up with the baby’s mother.
According to reports, for some unknown reason, the babysitters told the baby’s mother that they would bring her child to Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino, but they got into another dispute over pickup and payment.
Police say it was this argument that sent the trio over the edge, prompting them to leave the 9-month-old baby alone in the casino.
The baby was initially left out front in a carrier, but the 16-year-old boy reportedly ended up feeling bad and brought the child inside to a member of the casino’s security team.
Authorities say the teen lied and told security officials that he found the child on a bench outside.
It wasn’t until they reviewed the surveillance footage from the casino that police realized the teen had been lying the whole time.
Stewart and the two teens have both been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Several news outlets shared this shocking story on Facebook, where commenters desperately wanted to know what happened to the baby’s mother.
“Um where was this baby’s mother….argues over where and how much …..mon needs to be investigated also if true,” one woman wrote.
“Why was the meeting spot with the baby’s mother at a casino to begin with?” another added.
Others demanded to know why SitterCity hadn’t screened the 14-year-old babysitter to begin with.
“Where was the 14 year olds mother during all of this?” one woman wrote. “Terrible on all counts and the babysitting agency should be shut down if they did not check her identification.”
